In the event that I have done my job correctly, dotting this and crossing that, this issue of Alphabet Glue will launch itself in the very first days after our family leaves Vermont for our new home in Massachusetts. We may be knee deep in half-empty boxes and searching for the coffee grinder or a pair of clean socks, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still be having enough summer fun for all of us. So without further ado, just in time for the long and lazy days of summer, I am happy to announce that Volume Thirteen of Alphabet Glue has arrived!
This newest installment of Alphabet Glue is inspired by the spirit of relaxed and leisurely summer living. The projects and activities are simple, and for the most part make use of materials you likely already have taking up space in a kitchen cupboard or desk drawer near you. Revisit a kid science classic with a simplified new recipe that makes for a crowd-pleasing experiment you’ll want to try again and again. Fold tiny books that are small enough to slip into even the littlest pocket, and spend the summer filling them with sketches, notes, and (very) short stories.
Assemble your very own insect encyclopedias and take them along as you trek through park and backyard, surveying the resident insect life along the way. Trek to the library to fill your book bag with titles from four brand new booklists, and then head back to the hammock read up on everything from bugs to beach days, monsters to microscopic life.
Save the sticks from warm weather treats and use them to craft funky musical instruments that demonstrate some basics about the science of sound. Print a set of colorful cards that encourage you to test your prediction skills as you work your way through your summer reading list. Park yourself on a picnic blanket and whip up a batch of soft, cold ice cream on a hot day- without even using your freezer. Volume Thirteen of Alphabet Glue has plenty to offer in the way of inspiration for hands-on exploration, fun simple science, and the reading and writing of great summer stories.
