Fall is in full swing here in New England and we have the leaf piles and rainy days to prove it. This is a favorite time of year around here, and one that seems to lend itself so very well to both outdoor excursions and blustery afternoons spent reading on the couch. The best of both worlds seems to come our way in autumn, and this latest installment of Alphabet Glue is inspired by all the good creative fun that can be had this time of year when the weather forces us to start bringing some of the outdoors in.
Gather the acorns not yet stashed by the neighborhood squirrels and use them to create a set of story starters inspired by autumn (and ideal for use on those days when you’d like a little something to do, but the early wintery weather won’t quite cooperate).
Spend rainy afternoons assembling your own personal natural history museum, using official looking labels and diving into favorite field guides for identification of the treasures collected when the weather was better. Complement the creation of your museum collection by visiting the library to check out a pile of books on scientists and the way that they work, discover, and share their love of nature and science.
Spend some time exploring the way that the shift from autumn into winter affects the weather around you with a DIY barometer and then take notes in a handmade weather watcher’s notebook inspired by the lighthouse keeper’s logs of the coastal past. Follow up your observations with a read through some great books on lighthouses and the art and science of sailing. You can even take the theme a bit further and use pocket-sized printable Morse code reference cards to help you send secret messages by flashlight across the living room, if not across the ocean.
